Artist Statement
These photographs are a selection from a series I shot while traveling in 2008 and explore the provocative nature of youth culture and it’s relationship to their social environment. In particular these are portraits from South Korea, Mexico, Argentina and the United States, and they all reflect my interest in youth cultures and how they’re influenced by the environment on a global scale. Furthermore, there’s much to be said about a single portrait. Beyond personality I try to evoke issues of the community. Reflections of where they’re living and what they’re doing. And how they’re living and growing in the context of their environment.
Like these selects, my commercial and personal work both exhibit a documentary style that is at times quiet and serene and other times vibrant and energetic. Decisions on how to shoot are influenced entirely by the subject, many of whom I introduce myself to with no pretext. It is within this context that I enable myself to create intensely personal work, as it is customary that I get to know the subject somewhat, even if I get only a few minutes with them.
